October is Fire Prevention Month
Every October is Fire Prevention Month in the U.S., with Fire Prevention Week falling the week of October 9. This tradition started after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, and it’s still a vital reminder today.
Each year, fire departments and safety organizations across the country share tips to reduce fire risks at home. In 2025, the theme is “Charge into Fire Safety™: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.”
At North Point Realty, we care about more than just finding you the perfect home — we also want to help you keep it safe. Fire safety is one of those things we all know is important, but it’s easy to put off until “later.” With fall approaching, it’s the perfect time to give your home a quick safety check.
Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries
One of the easiest habits you can adopt is this:
When you change your clocks for Daylight Saving Time, change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
This built-in routine means that you’ll test your alarms twice a year, making sure they’re ready when you need them most.
- Test alarms monthly using the “test” button.
- Replace batteries twice a year.
- Replace smoke detectors every 10 years (check the manufacturer’s date on the back).
- Install alarms inside every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement.
Why Fall is the Right Time
Colder months bring increased fire risks from heating equipment, fireplaces, and holiday cooking. Making fire safety part of your fall checklist helps protect your home before those risks are at their peak.
Don’t Forget an Escape Plan
Technology is only part of fire safety. Every household should have a clear escape plan:
- Two ways out of every room.
- A meeting place outside the home.
- A quick practice with everyone in the household.
- It only takes a few minutes to walk through your plan — and it could save lives.
